YouTube Joey Salad's slammed for posing as a 'transgender' woman A YouTuber known for his attention-grabbing 'social experiments' usually earns a mixed bag of comments on his videos, but none have been more heated than those for his most recent clip. Joey Salads, 22, upset more than a few of his one million-plus subscribers when he uploaded his latest video last week, which sees him putting on a dress and claiming to be transgender. The New Yorker then follows women into women's restrooms in an effort to prove that 'most women are not comfortable sharing a bathroom with a trans person'. The experiment: YouTuber Joey Salads dressed up in bad drag to pose as 'a transgender' in a new YouTube video Warning: The 22-year-old insisted several times that he wasn't trying to be offensive, but maybe people found him so anyway pre bonded hairNot OK: People have been tweeting and commenting on the video to express how disgusted they are with it Joey opens the video with a current events recap, explaining that North Carolina recently passed a bill that requires people to use restrooms corresponding with their birth certificates. 'My trans friend told me that nobody is born to a sex or a gender, and that gender and sex are a social construct,' he says. He then explains that his trans friend is going to help him be 'a transgender' for the day, dressing up as a woman to enter women's bathrooms. 'Now I know that dressing up like a girl doesn't necessarily make me transgender, it would just make me a cross-dresser,' he says, in an effort to sound informed. 'But on the outside, people will still think that I'm transgender.' He reiterates that he got this information from a trans friend and it is 'transgender approved', implying that having a transgender friend means he can't possibly be bigoted toward the trans community. It's not bigoted, guys — really! Joey insists that he got the experiment OK'ed by a trans friend, whom we don't see in the video Seriously? However, he seems to make no attempt to look like an actual woman, cis or trans, and wears a cheap-looking wig with his five o'clock shadow Fully dressed, he comes out of his bathroom in a pink printed tunic top and black pants, which he is inexplicably wearing with socks and flip-flops.
He has a messy blonde wig on his head, but still sports several masculine tattoos, ungroomed dark eyebrows, and an obvious five o'clock shadow. 'Joe, you look fabulous,' his tone-deaf friend says, seeming to mock the LGBT community — as Joey by no stretch of the imagination looks like a woman. On FaceTime, his trans friend — whom viewers cannot see or confirm the existence of — tells Joey that his look is 'transgender approved'. Once again, though, it seems the lady doth protest too much, as Joey makes a point to defend himself once again — obviously anticipating that people will find problems with his stunt but not taking that as a clue that it's a bad idea. He tells viewers that the 'trans community' informed him that some trans women keep their low voices and genitals, so he ticks off everything he needs to. remy hair extensionsNot even trying: He also wears socks and flip-flops with his ill-fitting outfit Have you ever met one? This seems to be what he imagines trans women to look like 'Technically speaking, I would be considered somebody just starting their transgender transformation,' he says. Finally, the 'experiment' begins, and Joey follows a young woman into a public women's room. 'What are you doing?' she can be heard asking him from inside, though the camera doesn't follow them in. 'You can't be in here.' 'This is a girl's bathroom. I identify as a girl,' Joey says, making no effort to come off as anything more than a man wearing a dress. He seems either oblivious of or unconcerned with the myriad other things women — both cisgender and transgender — do to project their femininity. The woman grows angrier, telling Joey he isn't making any sense and needs to get out. 'You can't just say you're a girl!' she fires back. Next, he follows a pair of young women into the same bathroom.
What a creep: He then follows women into a bathroom to get a reaction Faulty experiment: Naturally, most of the women yell and tell him to get out — though it's likely more because they see Joey as a man fooling around and acting stupid than because they think he is an actual trans person 'Ew, get out! What are you doing in here?' one woman can be heard saying, in a tone that sounds suspiciously like it may have been staged. 'You're a guy,' one says. 'This is disgusting. Get the f*** out of here.' Another young woman who is more accepting also comes across as if she is speaking rehearsed lines, asking him hesitatingly: 'Are you transgender?' When he says yes, she answers: 'Good for you. How long have you been transgender for?' An older woman shrieks and pushes Joey out when he follows her in, insisting that he isn't a girl, clearly taking issue with the fact that a man is playing dress-up. perruques cheveux naturels'As you can tell, from this video, most women are not comfortable sharing a bathroom with a trans person,' Joey says at the end of the video, offering up his tiny sample as a representative for the entire country. 'There has to be a better solution for this debate because women are not comfortable.' Balance: Only one woman, who sounds like she is reciting rehearsed lines and asks way too many questions, seems OK with Joey following her into the bathroom Nice try: his woman screams and shoves Joey out, which he takes as proof that women don't want trans women in their bathrooms Doesn't take criticism: Though he warned viewers they might be offended, he then seemed unhappy that people complained about the clip Unsurprisingly, given the hot-button topic, commenters have been leaving impassioned responses on the video, which has been viewed nearly two million times. 'Seems to me like you're mocking the trans community,' wrote one. Another wrote: '"I SWEAR GUYS I HAVE A TRANSGENDER FRIEND I'M NOT BEING OFFENSIVE!!!!!!!" This is f***ing offensive on so many levels.' Another attacked Joey, writing: 'I've got a solution for this debate. Publicly execute Joey f***ing Salads.' Still, there were plenty of commenters who agreed with the point Joey seemed to be making — most of whom also seemed to think that Joey in a dress was an accurate representation of what most trans women look like. As several other people pointed out, Joey's farcical look was entirely unrealistic — and also besides the point. Weird: Plenty of people have commented on the video on social media try again: While some said Joey himself was creepy and insensitive, others pointed out his bad outfit Not cute: Several also said that real trans women wouldn't wear such an awful wig 'Joey Salads made a "trans experiment" in which he threw on a wig from Party City and his mother's Marshall's and went into female bathroom,' wrote one woman on Twitter. 'No trans person would ever approve such a crusty nasty wig,' said another. 'Transgender rights = being able to use the bathroom without someone needing to check my pants like a creepy pervert,' wrote one person on YouTube. Unfortunately, the YouTuber also shows an insensitivity to transgender people on his social media accounts. 'Everyone needs to stop b***ing about my Trans video,' he wrote on Friday. 'I am more worried about the guys who date Trans ppl, when the Trans still has a d***,' he added on Sunday. 'Why do Trans ppl get so f***ing mad when you ask if they have a d***, I asked like 5 today, they freakout and don't answer.'
